3/26/2020: “Why Coronavirus Will Stimulate Innovation”

Kumar Mehta of Forbes recently wrote a brief article on the history of how previous pandemics ended up spurring transformational growth and innovation and why Coronavirus will likely do the same. In the article he states, “Pandemics catalyze innovation and accelerate change by providing an environment for launching and testing new ideas. Today's Coronavirus is already changing cultural and business norms, shaking to the core of what we have taken for granted for decades and centuries. The article goes on to describe how the Boston Small Pox Epidemic led to the development of the Free Press, and how SARS led to the growth of e-commerce in China. Mehta also explains how there has already been a trend in place of moving towards a more isolationist economy where consumers can buy goods and services that allow them to not need to leave the comfort of their home. With the development of remote working tools, food delivery, and streaming services, companies have already started to allow people to develop new behaviors. In the coming months and years, he expects to see many more developments that further this trend leading to a long-term societal change.
