4/23/2020: Manufacturing’s New Normal

Every industry is currently facing a change to the way work gets completed. Some industries are adapting seamlessly through remote work and digital tools while other industries, like manufacturing, where the workforce is required to be onsite, are experiencing a more difficult adjustment. In the future, each industry will likely take valuable lessons learned from this experience and make long-term shifts to the way they operate.

In a recent article posted to Industry Week titled “What Will Manufacturing’s New Normal Be After COVID-19?” Artem Kroupenev, the VP of Strategy at Augury, put forth his vision of the future of Manufacturing. One idea Artem suggests is that the U.S. will see a revival of domestic manufacturing. In the past, American companies moved much of their production offshore in order to receive more competitive prices. Through the current pandemic, the U.S. has realized it isn’t currently capable of meeting the demand for many pandemic necessities via domestic manufacturing. This, along with  advances in technology and automation allowing U.S. companies to compete with offshore prices, will lead to much more production being moved back to the U.S.. This will be a boon to U.S. manufacturers and also create new jobs for technologically savvy workers. The article also discusses additional trends, including:

·  Decoupling of Supply Chains

·  Data Infrastructure as a Strategic Asset

·  Digitization as a Competitive Advantage

·  Remote Work, Collaboration and the ‘Virtual Shift’
