In recent years, the U.S. waste and recycling industries have seen a significant increase in consolidation as larger industry participants are looking to roll up smaller companies in order to achieve significant operating leverage. It is currently estimated that the industry spent as much as $3.46 billion on acquisitions in 2021. In a recent WasteDive article, Cole Rosengren details the activity of some of the largest players in the industry.
- Waste Management (WM) - Reported $75 million spent on acquisition during 2021 including Advanced Disposal Services. Company executives said they will continue to pursue acquisitions opportunistically in the coming year.
- Republic Service - Spent over $1 billion on acquisitions during 2021 and continue to look for deals in solid waste and environmental services.
- GFL Environmental - Completed 46 acquisition during 2021, spending over $2.25 billion. The Company anticipates spending up to CA$525 million.
- Waste Connections - Spent over $1 billion on 30 deals in 2021 adding $400 million in annualized revenue. The Company has already added another $100 million worth of Revenue in 2022.
