03/11/2022: M&A Deals Top 5 Trillion for First Time

The global deal activity for mergers and acquisitions in 2021 reached a new all-time record high of $5.9 trillion. This is $1.7 trillion higher than the previous record set in 2015 at $4.2 trillion.

 

Companies from across all different industries and geographies have used the advantages of low interest rates and high stock valuations to participate in the M&A boom. Other market conditions such as inflation and supply chain issues have also persuaded both buyers and sellers to take advantage of higher selling prices for sellers and lower costs of debt for buyers. Transactional volume topped over 63,000 total deals, with the U.S. experiencing the largest jump in M&A activity, and attributing to 42% of the total global value, respectively, with $2.5 trillion in deal flow. Smaller deals in the middle market included between 400 – 500 transactions. Given the current environment as 2022 starts out, companies are still expected to remain aggressive throughout the year.
