Published in early March 2022, Bain & Company released a report highlighting recent trends in private equity, titled, “Global Private Equity Report 2022.” The report identifies highlights within private equity transactions in 2021, as well as some items to keep in mind moving into 2022.
A few key takeaways:
- Global buyout deal value topped $1.12 trillion in 2021, while buyout exit values soared to $960 billion

- While deal value doubled in 2021 compared to 2020 ($577 billion), the number of completed private equity deals remained near 4,000, the five-year average

- Transactions in North America accounted for $537 billion of the $1.12 trillion in deal value
- Software companies accounted for 25% of total buyout value, representing 31% of all deal volume by private equity groups in 2021
- Average deal size surpassed $1 billion for the first time ever, increasing average deal size by 57% year-over-year
- In 2021, Global funds raised $1.2 trillion in private capital, a 14% increase from 2020
- Inflation is expected to have an impact on the industry as the cost of debt increases, as well as a decrease in multiple expansion
