In an article titled, “Digital Ad Revenue Jumped 35% in the U.S. Last Year, Biggest Gain Since 2006,” author Megan Graham dissects data in a recent report on digital ad revenue published in a report from Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers. As consumers stayed home and turned to online shopping and media throughout the pandemic, digital ad revenue in the United States jumped 35% to $189 billion in 2021. This is the highest year over year growth that the industry has seen since 2006. The rapid growth is attributed to an increase in consumers use of online services, specifically in digital audio and video, as well as 5.4 million new business applications in 2021, up 1 million from the year prior.
A few additional highlights:
- U.S. e-commerce sales totaled $870 billion in 2021 – a 14% increase over 2020
- 10 digital platforms and publishers accounted for 78% of the market’s revenue
- Digital audio advertising was the fastest growing segment of the market, increasing 58% to $4.9 billion in 2021
